Quick Observation

While the local moose had tracked up all the open areas that were not covered in alder, we still managed a few decent turns between alder bashing our way down an east facing slope today. The consensus is that the South Rockies really needs another meter of snow to make low elevation riding enjoyable. We found surface hoar down 10cm but didn't experience any shooting cracks or whumphing today - although we only made it up to 1650m in elevation. Its possible it may be more reactive at upper elevations that have seen more wind effect. The total snowpack depth at that elevation was 110cm. Near the base of the snowpack we once more found the deep persistent layer of facets and depth hoar in the bottom 20cm.
