Lubec Trail

We went out to tour from the Lubec trailhead in hopes that the wind in the divide would limit warming the surface of the snow while temperatures cranked up today. We also were out to observe any avalanche activity from the prior warm temperatures. We were greeted by strong winds at the trailhead that as we gained elevation began to knock us off of our feet. The winds were predominately out of the west but were swirling at times. Wind loading was observed on all aspects and at our high point the skintrack was covered by blown snow in less than 30 minutes. We observed hard wind slabs that our edges could hardly dig into. In isolated locations where the wind slabs were softer we observed cracking off of our skis. We observed a large glide crack below the north face of Red Crow Mountain. Something to keep in mind for those who may try to ski this line this season.
