It was a beautiful, mild day. Snow was being transported by light SW winds.
Snowpack
Snowpack depths are variable- we observed both exposed rocks and up to 280cm snowdepth. A quick pit in a shallow area (~40cm) revealed large depth hoar crystals, 6mm on average, and facets. We also dug a pit in a deeper area with previous wind effect to check out the reactivity of the wind slab and what they were sitting on. We had no reactive tests (ECTX,) but found a buried surface hoar layer ~50cm down, and mostly rounding facet grain types.
While driving back to Haines, we stopped at treeline and boot-packed off the road to investigate surface hoar. 4-5mm surface hoar growth was on top of about 20cm of soft snow resting on a supportable, thick, ~5cm crust.
