We ski-toured Todd Lake and dug a pit around 6,500 ft NNE facing slope. There was some isolated cracking on the skin track but no whoomphing. The wind was blowing hard over the ridge and had deposited a lot of wind-drifted snow. Plenty of cornices are forming. We tried to ski cut a couple, but they didn't budge. Here's our pit findings: - Snowpack on the leeward side (NNE) 300cm (118") - Thick Rain Crust buried at 80cm deep from the top of the snowpack - Another Rain Crust buried 113cm deep from the top of snowpack - Week layer at 150cm deep - I suspect this is the persistent weak layer. It didn't budge in the column test, but using a lot of force, I got it to move and slide all of the snowpack on top of it. Column test results: -Storm/Wind Slab buried at 40cm deep in from top of snowpack slid at CT7 -Storm/Wind Slab buried at 60 cm deep from top of snowpack slid at CT18 -Storm/Wind Slab buried at 100cm deep from top of snowpack slid at CT30 The moral of the story: Fluffy snow sitting on top of the rain crusts moves fairly easily, and lots of layers and more snow accumulation probably won't help. Use caution.
