Toured from Convict Lake up the ridgeline that separates the Mono Jim gully from Tobacco Flat. We found boot to calf deep fresh snow, minimally wind effected below 8500’, with increasing wind effect above that and in ridgelines. The old surface from the Christmas storms was generally supportable except where brush was hidden. We observed evidence of multiple natural avalanches in the Mono Jim East Gullies, and some cracking along our final descent into Convict Lake where the lightly wind effected new snow failed on the previous surface. While winds were light along our route, we also observed blowing snow higher in the drainage.

Both gullies ran in the New Years storm, possibly multiple times. Unknown trigger, likely natural. Origin appeared to be in the rocks near ridgeline. Bases of the gullies were scoured to ground with debris deposited well into the fans of each.
