Went up to Bishop Bowl to check out the new snow, which was a mix of lighter cold snow at the surface on top of a thicker layer of new but dense storm snow above the older wind packed surface. I dug a pit at 10,200' on a NE aspect with a 25deg slope, and found the snowpack to be pretty right-side-up, increasing in density from top to bottom, but still generally F hard all the way down. HS here was about 80 cm, and the basal facets were present but very shallow (avg 10cm) , and largely involved with vegetation on the ground. There was a very thin crust/facet layer about 30cm from the ground, and compression tests did fail on the basal facets first, and then eventually at that crust. I didn't observe any instabilities in the newer storm snow, or in the new/old snow interface. Higher elevation slopes were showing evidence of wind transport, deposits and scouring, and lower elevation slopes remained barely covered.
