Quick Observation
- Forecasted wind slab problem was observed higher up in the Zoa zone; dug a small pit and before isolating a column, the wind slab fractured and slid (see photo). Pit photo is convex NW-ish facing slope @ ~1800m. - In this specific spot, windslab appeared to involve the recent colder/softer snow whereas everything beneath the slab is firm, hard, and did not fail anywhere on column test. However, skiing throughout the day was generally soft/powdery with occasional catching on harder wind affected snow. - Colder wind was felt at times during day. - The windslab was observed (small chunks) sliding in other places when breaking trail. Shooting cracks were observed a few times when breaking trail, up to ~1m length crack, again on the top slab. - No avalanches or large slab chucks sliding observed. - Inversion & lower clouds shaping up towards end of day.
