Snowpack

Dug a test profile immediately below the lateral moraine separating the glacier from the southern bowl while out skiing the east side of Cayoosh. Because there were few alpine observations at the time, we chose to stick to low angle terrain and aimed to collect snowpack data to adjust our mindset for future tours. It was unknown whether the Dec. 8th surface hoar was still persistent up high and in this region, so our primary aims with this pit were to: 1) identify if the Dec. 8th lauyer was a mixture of facets and surface hoar or just facets and 2) test the reactivity of this interface on wind-loaded alpine slopes. Below are our results from our tests performed: CTH25SP down 70cms on Dec. 8th FC (repeated 2x) ECTN25 down 70cms on Dec. 8 FC We did not observe surface hoar on the Dec. 8th layer and it was not reactive to skier-triggering on this specific slope. If you have any additional questions on our test results, please email me at [email protected].
