Quick report
Snowmobiling on lick creek has lots of dirt and packed ice. “Old Blue” overheated several times before I jumped on my partner’s fan cooled more appropriate trusty steed for the frozen road conditions. A solid freeze from Saturday night and we made use of our ski crampons and boot crampons during our travels in the early morning. Given how hot it had been Wednesday-Saturday, we were pleasantly surprised at how “locked up” the snowpack felt. Booting up an east aspect without punching through, testing the depth of the frozen surface snow in several places, and even skiing a NE aspect at 12:30 that was still hard and frozen all indicated a more healed snowpack than we expected to find. We also remarked about how there were less avalanches from the record heat wave than we were anticipating. We traveled on all aspects from 6400’-9300’. The sticky icky and trap door snow I experienced on Friday was a distant memory and Cali quality corn was harvested on a south aspect at 1:30pm at 9000’. It provided a glimmer of hope in the dark tunnel that has been this ski season.
