Quick report
I climbed Tomyhoi as a two-day trip finishing today. Beautiful weather and a stable snowpack with variable conditions. There is essentially no snow below 4000 ft, and in the woods below 4600 ft or so the snow is re-frozen and unpleasant. Above 4600 ft I found between 0 and 4 cm of dry snow atop a firm crust, with plenty of wind effect above treeline. I saw a few old pinwheels but no other recent signs of instability. I also saw quite a few 3-4 day old snowmobile tracks in the tarn basin below Yellow Aster Butte, which is unfortunate as per my understanding they are not permitted anywhere near this area (it being a wilderness area). The weather yesterday was chilly, with moderate west winds above treeline and clouds surrounding many of the summits which dissipated just after sunset. It was cold overnight, with my thermometer reading 14°, although I noticed a warming trend. Today was quite a bit warmer, with temperatures in the sunshine just barely getting above freezing, although I noticed no meaningful softening on southern aspects.
