Snowpack

We went to Castle Peak today to find some spring snow conditions on the southern side of the peak.  Temperatures were warm this morning with remote sensors in the Donner Summit area in the low to mid 40's.  The snow surface was soft from the start of our tour with a poor to no refreeze of the snow surface overnight.  Moving up in terrain we did find a weak melt freeze crust on some open SW aspects near around 7600'.  As we moved over to an east aspect, we found deep wet snow with ski kicks producing small wet loose avalanches on small test slopes.  Cornices in this area are wet and sagging.  Deep wet snow was found on all aspects up to our high point of 8500' by 10:30am.  Travel conditions were slow and sticky with semi-supportable surface snow.
