Tamarack Peak

We toured some of the lesser traveled portions of Tamarack Peak this morning across N-NE-E aspects between 8,600' and 9,900'. Similar to other portions of the forecast area, soft surface facets exist on shaded, wind protected slopes below treeline. Surface facets in this area were about 4 inches deep and much less developed than what we have observed in recent days along the Sierra Crest in the 7,000' to 8,000' elevation range. On Tamarack Pk surface facets were mostly 4F hard compared to the F hard facets observed along the Sierra Crest in recent days.

Due to the air temperature inversion conditions, air temperatures were above freezing by late morning. Very minor amounts of snow surface melt were noted on sun exposed S aspects. We noted thin melt-freeze crust on the snow surface on SE-S aspects.

As in other locations around the forecast area, rough wind scoured snow surfaces exist at and above treeline.
