Snowpack
Snow cover in this area ranged from 4 to 10 inches across NW-N-NE-E aspect terrain. The deepest areas of snow were in near treeline terrain with protection from previous NE wind events.
The existing snowpack is weak from top to bottom. In areas where snowfall from late Oct and the very beginning of Nov was not scoured away by NE winds, there is varying amounts of chained depth hoar at the base of the snowpack. We went looking for near treeline areas where wind slab existed on top of depth hoar/faceted snow. In these areas we triggered some very localized cracking and recorded some unstable snowpit test results. None of the wind slabs we found covered very much terrain, but conditions existed for a size D1 avalanche in isolated areas.
