Quick report
Observations collected while driving and during a few short roadside stops. There appeared to be a cycle of small, sun-induced avalanche activity today. I did not observe any slides that became larger than D1.5, but visibility from the highway is pretty restricted even during clear weather. Cornices have grown quite large in places; these heavy beasts are "great" triggers for deeply buried weak layers. I observed one large cornice that had recently broken off and triggered a large slab avalanche on the slope below (see attached photo).
Weather
Lots of direct sun in the Smokys and southern portion of the Sawtooths during the morning and early afternoon hours. Temperatures right around freezing.
Avalanche
There appeared to be a cycle of sun-induced avalanche activity today, thanks to warm temps and plenty of solar radiation. This seemed to be worse/more widespread closer to Galena Pass, with less activity as I traveled north towards Stanley.
