Clear south of Galena Summit. Partly cloudy north of Galena Summit. Wind on Fox Pk was light to moderate from the west. Audible upper elevation wind at times. Mostly calm below ridgeline.
Snowpack
We were most interested in meltwater penetration depths on various aspects and elevations, as we anticipate wet slab avalanches and gauge the likelihood of gouging wet loose avalanches.
<8,500':
(2/8) ↓35 cm has been well wetted and in some places refrozen into an ice lens. Large percolation columns extend from (2/8) to the ground. The snowpack was moist to very wet depending on aspect. Weak 3-4 cm crusts near the surface broke down easily in the sun.
8,500'-9,200':
Steep NNW-N-NE saw surface melting but not much meltwater penetration. (2/8) remained dry. All other steeper sunnier aspects have pushed significant water to the (2/8) weak layer.
Avalanche
We observed a handful of wet loose avalanches. See pictures for an idea of distribution within a cirque. Some were D2 in the wrong terrain. Most were generally surficial. Some appeared to gouge deeper in shallow, rocky areas. No wet slab avalanches observed.
