Quick report
We agreed not to go into avalanche terrain today, and then saw several recent avalanches to reinforce that decision. Informal and formal tests showed multiple concerning weak layers in the top 100cm of snow. One of my riding partners unintentionally remote triggered a size D2 avalanche that failed on facets just above the mid-December rain crust. He was in flat terrain when it happened and nobody was caught.

Pick your poison of weak layers today: We saw recent wind slab avalanches, and avalanches that failed on deeper facets. A snowpit at 8800ft on a N aspect showed facets above the mid-December rain crust, and the Jan 2nd double facet layer above that.
