Quick report
Snowpack: Dug a pit on the Showboat Ridge/Troy saddle area to check on the stability of the storm slab and freezing rain crust layer from last weekend. Most surprisingly, a faceted layer below a melt-freeze crust down 100cm was the most reactive layer: ECTP25 and PST 20/100 to end. We also had several other ECTP and ECTN results in the storm slab (see attached pit profile). The freezing rain crust layer was not reactive to our ECT tests, but was reactive to a PST. Weather: snowing at the pit elevation but warming. We were in a sheltered location, but winds just above treeline were moderate. Other than the slides seen in the meadow above the cabin, no other signs of instability were observed, though visibility was poor. The weak layer at 100cm with the unstable storm snow on top had us thinking about larger step-down avalanches, so we stayed out of avalanche terrain.
