Collapsing, Poor Snowpack Structure

Beautiful, mostly sunny day, with temps in the low to mid 20s. Stayed in sheltered low angle terrain on E thru NE slopes where you'll find recycled powder as the surface hoar continues to become very prevalent. On my way up a NE slope (<25° @7500') I heard a large whoompf and felt the collapse of the snowpack. Decided to dig in that area and was surprised by my findings. The melt/freeze crusts that concerned me last weekend have seemed to start bonding well with the adjacent layers. But my failure came much lower down on facets that are sitting on the old November crust. I got an ECTP 23 with clean propagation. Given how stout the slab is above this layer and the fact I was able to collapse it gave me pause for sure. This will be a layer to watch as we get more loading.
