- <p>I triggered a large audible collapse or whoompf on a southwest facing slope at 6300'. Whoompfs indicate unstable snow, and I found a weak layer of buried surface hoar and near surface facets capping a thin sun crust about 2' deep.</p>
I could see some recent natural activity, repeaters in South Wood Camp.
This persistent weak layer is worrisome because it sits on top of a smooth and much harder sun-crust
The recent snow is sticking well to steep terrain until temperatures warm up.
Snowpack
Thin sun-crust on south facing slopes. Still fairly arduous breaking trail because you sink pretty deeply even with fat skis.
