Lower end snow totals observed in GTNP than Teton Pass, and much less than the west side/Targhee. Crusts most likely formed from mid-week sunny periods were felt on easterlies and southerlies up to 8.5k-9k with 2-6in of new snow on top. Instability observed on wind exposed slopes; 4-8" thick wind slab/wind skin found in N facing terrain adjacent to Broken Thumb from 9700' down to 8000'; a normally moderately sheltered ski run was wind affected from starting zone to canyon floor. Slab would crack under ski turns, but we saw very little energy or propagation in the slab. Upside down with lighter powder snow under the wind slab. We found less wind affect on lower elevation shots like the Y. Visibility was obscured, but wouldn't have been surprised to see some D1-D2 avalanches across Avalanche Canyon on normal offenders like Wister flanks, Nugget, etc. We did not ski Broken Thumb, but listed observation as such in case any interested parties were checking the site. Would recommend steering clear of that piece of consequential terrain at least until this cycle settles.
