Visibility was limited to about a 100 yards with a thick fog. Precipitation during the day was minimal with a fog of mist and a very brief period of S-1 snowfall. Winds were calm to very light and no snow transport was occurring on the moist snow surface.

Snowpack

At 5800 feet there was about 1cm of new overnight snow sitting on a decomposing 1F hard meltfreeze crust. This crust contained wet grains and moist snow below it. 

At 6300 feet on a South aspect we observed a snowpack height of 120 cm. There was about 5cm new overnight moist snow sitting on the surface of a 1F hard meltfreeze crust. Moist snow extended down to 40 cm below the surface. A thin Pencil hard crust on top of the V-Day (2/14) surface hoar underneath was observed down 42 cm from the surface. Test results on the V-Day were: ECTP 19 and 28, and CT 23 SC. The 1/28 surface hoar, mixed with meltform grains, was down 47 cm below the surface and sitting on top of a P- decomposing rain crust. No test results were observed on this layer. 

Higher in elevation at 6500 ft and on a North aspect, snowpack height was 210 cm. This location is about 3m to lookers left from where we collected snowpack data on February 16. The top 5 cm of new moist snow sat on 6 mm surface hoar, mixed with small (1mm) graupel, which was on top of a layer of 1F hard wind packed snow. Storm snow from the second half of February produced moderate force ECTN and CT RP results down 25 cm from the surface. 

  • The V-Day (2/14) surface hoar (ave. size 8mm, and easy to find) was down 65 cm from the surface and under a mostly 1F hardness slab. No test results observed on this layer with CT or ECT. PST 57/100 END, and easily slid out into pit. 
  • The 1/28 surface hoar (ave. size 10mm, easy to spot in pit wall) was down 78 cm.  No test results observed on this layer with CT or ECT. PST 75/100 END.

-The 1/28 SH layer sits on a thin (0.5 thick, Pencil hard) rain crust. Below the crust is small rounding faceted grains (1mm in size and 1F- hardness) for a layer of about 5 cm thick transitioning to 1F to P hard grains deeper in the snowpack.
