While skinning up we also had a single tree shaking collapse at about 6,500’ on a northern aspect. Regarding ski quality, the storm snow seems to have consolidated and the softer snow underneath is now being preserved by a nice crust in open areas. There was some freezing fog mid day that seemed to be the culprit. The crust is thinner or absent in denser trees and most pronounced on the southern aspects and in the open.
Avalanche
We toured off the north side of Todd ridge today, with a ski cut we intentionally triggered an R2D1 storm slab on a small 38 degree north facing test slope at 6,800’. It failed just above the crust and was about 25cm deep. Shooting cracks extended to the edge of the start zone but this was in less steep terrain and did not slide.
