Quick report
I snowmobiled around the Newberry Crater area this morning with a goal of looking a the snow surface. I wanted to check conditions and see whether I could find any surface hoar. I did not find any surface hoar or near-surface facets in the top 15-20 cm of the snowpack. The snow surface had a soft, 1-cm thick breakable crust on most aspects, though it was firmer/crustier on solar aspects and underneath trees that had dripped melting snow. There was also some dry/weak snow on top (could not make a snowball), but I did not find any faceted grains when looking through my loupe. Winds were light out of the SW, gusting moderate. I saw some light blowing snow at the top of the NE-facing bowl, but this was just briefly when the wind picked up. The sky was overcast and the cloud deck was high in the morning (mountains were visible) and became increasingly dark/cloudy by midday. The temperature also seemed to drop, though I only took one air temp measurement (29 F at 11 AM at 7800'). I did not observe any precipitation during my time out there. Snow depth measured between 70-100 cm.
