Quick report
Where are all the recent observations? I know a TON of people have been getting out… maybe it’s just that the summary is that it’s a pretty damn good late spring out there, and everyone knows it. :) There’s some great smooth corn out there, and these little refreshes have been helping keep things good. There’s also some mank depending on aspect and time of day as expected, but lots of areas are really good (helps if the slope is not right next to rocks heating it up/falling all over it. Also some aspects are still delivering on the evening refreeze, dropped A La Mode on Sunday 5/26 at 6:45 PM and once again it was prime. Pretty amazing. Did a long tour at Broken Top on Monday 5/27, basically circumnavigated it so got to see a lot of different aspects. That day was hot, so figured I’d check out the north face, which really seems to require a hot day for good corn. Climbed up climbers right wall of crater, dropped a line down to No Name (mank at that time at the top but better down low). Saw a couple nordic skiers touring out there, the only people I saw out there the whole day. Dropping onto the Bend glacier, seeing the avy debris from that big wet slab reported a couple weeks ago up close and personal was something else. That thing was HUGE! Wrapped around the corner and climbed the north face to the summit notch, snow was surprisingly good consistent corn. Dropped in at 5:30 PM and probably wouldn’t have wanted to be earlier on that face. Snow was about as good as can be expected on that face. Then climbed back up the west face to 11 o’clock. I had hoped that by that time (almost sunset, like 8:30) the snow in there would have started refreezing, but it was still pretty manky and wet. Not fun, but probably as good as it can be in there on a hot day. Saw some amazing terrain, but I would not necessarily recommend that route...
