Broken clouds in the morning with increasing cloud coverage throughout the day, light gusts from the SE along the ridge, no precipitation
Snowpack
Lower elevations had a thin blanket of decomposing snow over rounding facets. At higher elevations, the landscape was a mix of bare ground or old wind-drifted snow mostly in snow catchment terrain like bowls or drainages. Snow surfaces were variable- either sastrugi, intermittent breakable wind layer, or pockets of soft fresh snow. We dug a snowpit along the eastern ridge of North Bowl. The snowpit revealed old wind-drifted snow with developed basal facets and depth hoar. We did not get any concerning test results.
There is not a lot of new snow in the forecast, so we are in an entrenchment period of old wind-drifted snow with minimal avalanche activity in the Chugach State Park.
