Quick report
Dug and did some tests on a west facing slope at 8,700'. The January 4th weak layer is buried 65cm (2ft) in this location. The bottom half of the slab is 1F and the upper half of the slab is 4F hardness. All tests failed on ~1mm facets at the 1/4 interface. I think I noticed some 2-3mm surface hoar, but it was difficult to tell for sure. Here are the results...
Total height of snow = 113cm (~4ft). Slope angle = 20 degrees.

Then things got weird. I did another ECT, but this time extended the length of the column to 2 meters (6.5ft).
ECTP 28 (again) down 65cm. Propagation to the end of the column.

Noticed from the Whale’s Tail. Talked to some folks in the parking lot that got better eyes on the slide. They noticed ski tracks nearby. Possibly skier triggered. The crown looked fresh. Most likely occurred yesterday or today. It was hard to tell how wide the avalanche was or how far it ran from my view point. The crown looked to be about 3 feet deep. Most likely slid on the 1/4 interface.
