Quick report

Went into Hillman's today. Coming up the TRT, you could hear water running under the snow in many spots and bridges were melted out. Crossing over the Cutler River between Hermit Lake and Hillman's, the caretaker noted that the snow bridge that was missing today was there yesterday. As we started to skin up Hillman's proper, one of my pole plants went easily through the undermined snow and was lost to the Cutler. A minute or so later, while getting out of my skis, I broke through with one foot. This section had maybe 6-8" of poorly bridged, non-cohesive snow on top of flowing water. We decided to turn around here after this series of unfortunate events, but noted that higher up looked like it could still be fun skiing. The terrain is looking closer to April than March, springtime hazards included. It is also changing very quickly day to day. Today served as a reminder of how abruptly conditions can deteriorate. Here's hoping this weekend brings a little bit more winter.
