Chimney Pond, Katahdin

In most locations above tree-line, there is a dense wind slab packed on top of the 12/29 rain crust with weak snow beneath. The wind slab ranges from 0-50cm depending on the topography, and the weak snow layer often extends from the crust to the ground. Below tree-line, 20-40 cm of light fluffy snow abounds, although coverage of the ground is variable.
