Taylor Mt

Warm temps and sunshine made for spring like conditions on all aspects in the mid and lower elevations and solar aspects in the upper elevations. We dug a pit in a deep spot at 10,100 feet on a west aspect. Test results were unremarkable with no propagation. Structure was generally good with the exception being facets in the bottom 20cm. This layer is too deep for a human to intitiate an avalanche in this location, as the height of snow was 180 cm/70".

The Christmas crust was not present in this snowpit, but appears to be present at 9,000 feet and lower. Snow was wind affected in sheltered locations between 8,500-10,300 feet as the result of winds 3-4 days ago on Dec 27/28. Surface hoar was observed in sheltered pockets (on the surface) between 7,200-9,000 feet. Distribution is spotty. Warm temps and solar input made for challenging travel in the middle and lower elevations in the afternoon. In shallow snowpack locations the snow became isothermal. Rollerballs and shallow wet loose avalanches were occuring in these locations as well.
