Below-freezing temps, though the late-morning sun was intense and made me strip down to my sun hoodie. Cloud cover increased throughout the day. Winds were light with no blowing snow.
Snowpack
I found the persistent slab structure (the 2/10 facets under a 1-Finger hard slab) at all elevations I travelled and on northwest-north-northeast-east aspects. The 2/10 interface was an average of 70-120 cm below the surface. The persistent slab structure was most evenly distributed in the near-treeline band. It was more broken below treeline and in wind-exposed terrain.
- Northeast, 9900 ft. sheltered below treeline where HS was 180 cm from wind drifting and the 2/10 interface was down 90cm: ECTP23 at the 2/10.
- North, 10,150 ft. exposed and wind-stripped terrain near treeline where HS was 100 and the 2/10 interface was down 55cm under a 5cm 1-Finger faceting crust: ECTX, PST 75/100 End, CT11 SC in the 2/10 facets under the crust.
- North, 10,600 ft. under a wind-loaded ridge where HS was 140 and the 2/10 interface was down 75 cm: ECTP26
All but very sheltered terrain was wind-whacked. I found a few more sheltered test slopes downwind of tree fences where the wind slabs were soft and small, but still reactive. I got shooting cracks.
