Toured in the Simpson Pass and Healy area from Sunshine. Great powder riding in areas protected from wind and in the trees.
Rider triggered accidental size 1 avalanche in open trees on a convex roll around 30 degrees on a West aspect. No rider involvement. Loose storm snow slid on the surface hoar layer. Crown was 10m wide and 20cm to 40cm deep, ran 15m-25m.
Observed cracking in the new storm snow on convex rolls and in specific wind effected areas. One crack propagated in a wind effected area. Outside of wind effected terrain propagation was not observed. Observed reactivity on the surface hoar layer when jumping on small convex rolls and hand shearing to test stability on various aspects in the trees.
The surface hoar interface is a concern to watch out for from our observations. Caution around rolls, steeps, open or connected terrain.
