Mountain Conditions Report

About 30mm of precipitation fell Sunday night (August 21) with freezing levels at around 2500m. Yesterday August 24th pockets of snow up to 20cm deep remained on north and east aspects on Mt Rogers and the Swiss Peaks but most snow was gone from south and west aspects. Melting snow made for some greasy lichen in areas but we did not need crampons once we were on the rock. The Mt Rogers South face schrund was easily crossed on avalanche debris and the decent gully from the Swiss-Truda Col is in great shape. Enough snow remained on the Tupper Glacier to make for some thoughtful glacier travel on the decent with bridges and snow plugs being soft and somewhat disguised by the new snow.

Lydia Marmont SG/AAG
Penny Goddard SG/AAG
