Bullmoose bowls

dave.mustang, Saturday 8th February, 2025 10:38PM

Bluebird day in Bullmoose. Started out cold (-20°) at the truck but warmed up to -2° by lunch time in the sun. Broke trail in about 20 cm fresh pow on the way in, snowpack is very low still. Averages between 70 and 90 cm down low, ridge tops are wind scoured and almost bare. Above the school bus we rode the bowl and found some good snow, but shallow with lots of trees. Our pit was at 1600m on an East Aspect, 90 cm depth of snow. There were several crust layers already that we saw react, a melt or rain crust down 30 cm or so and another at 40 cm both reacting in the moderate range. Another crust down at 60 cm reacted barely in the hard range. Already developing large (2-3 mm) facets on the ground. Lots of evidence of small sluffs in the storm snow, especially below cornices. Cornice development and wind scouring up high, ridges still almost bare. Great day, but it’s not going to be great riding till we get another few storms. Great start to the winter snowpack though!
