Shredley Pass

wlewis, Wednesday 23rd October, 2024 9:32PM

We took a spin up to Pedley Pass today. The debris and crown from a size 3 a few weeks ago was still visible (pictured). We skinned up the wide tree shoulder to access the ridge at 2400m. Lots of previous wind affect visible. Luckily our day saw only light W/NW winds. We skied back down through the trees to stay out of the large avalanche paths. Skiing was good with a supportive upper snowpack up high, previously wind affected. And transitioned to a little variable lower down. But overall great turns. We dug on a west aspect at 2200m. Found two surface layers in the top 20cm. The December 1st melt freeze / facets were down 70cm. Below this the snowpack is well facetted to ground with depth hoar. Compression tests gave results in the recent storm snow and surface hoar, indicating an issue where enough snow sits above those layers. No result occured on the December 1st.
