Changing weather

jcbfrsr, Wednesday 23rd October, 2024 9:32PM

Toured into Warspite bowl Saturday. Temps were -3 in the parking lots when we started and -1 when we left around 1pm, didn’t measure up higher. We got to about 2200m before turning around, winds were blowing very hard in the bowl and we saw no reason to continue. The snow was variable right from the lake with wind slabs of varying stiffness, once at ~2100m we started seeing very stiff slabs with zero ski penetration. That said only mildly hollow sounding and no shooting cracks or whumpfing occurred during the day. We did see one recent size 2 slab avalanche under the north aspect of the most northern unnamed peak on Mt Warspite at around 2000m. Winds were blowing very hard with some new snow falling and everything high up looks either stripped or freshly loaded. Lots of spin drift coming off the cliffs.
