Raising the Bar

northrockiesfieldteam, Saturday 8th February, 2025 10:38PM

We saw evidence of a large size 3 slab avalanche on a southeast facing slope. We were speculating it was likely triggered by sun and warming a few days ago and may have failed on an old sun crust. It looked to be maybe 40-50cm deep. It was unfortunetly too far away to reach to investigate properly. We saw no other avalanches in the area but cornices looked large. We went up to Renshaw to raise the bar and sensors on the weather station because it was almost buried with a total height of snow at around 330cm! We then dug a quick pit around 1800m at treeline on a northeast facing slope. There were no significant weak layers found in the upper meter of the snowpack, but there was around 10-15cm of new snow overnight that may be forming into windslabs on north to east facing lee slopes in the alpine due to recent winds.
