The Elephant In the Room ?

northrockiesfieldteam, Wednesday 23rd October, 2024 9:33PM

The chance of triggering an avalanche in Hasler today was unlikely, but let's face the elephant in the room: so was the likelyhood of finding good riding. There isn't a flake of powder left after the rain came through the other day and poured right to mountain top. While its frozen hard now, the rain left runnels from water flowing through the snowpack a few days ago visible on many larger slopes. A crust of variable thickness (in some places breakable when you sled or walk over it, in others not) now coats the snowpack from staging to summit. The one benefit to this crust is it serves as a great medium for snow art (snart for short). We found no avalanche problems or significant weak layers during our day out but we had a great time sculpting in the alpine. If youre planning your own day of "snart" fun in Hasler in the near future, it's a good idea to bring tire chains as the access road is glare ice!
