Mostly clear skies and cold temperatures made for perfect weak layer forming weather. Winds were variable, calm to light. While there was observable previous wind loading, we observed no active transport.
Snowpack
Hiking out from the Titus Lake Trailhead to the Lower Titus Weather Station for some routine maitenance, Ben and I found weak, unsupported snow on every aspect and elevation we travelled. These sugary facets surrounded a widespread crust from early November near the base of the snowpack, with varying presence of crusts throughout the rest of the snowpack. With 40-50cm HS, there was enough snow to move on steeper slopes. Currently these grains present a potential for a loose dry propblem, as there is no body or moisture holding the snowpack together. More concerningly is that this weak structure is going to be loaded heavily during this upcoming storm with heavier and more consolidated snow. What this may present is a classic strong over weak structure in the snowpack — a textbook setup for an upcoming active avalanche cycle.
