Quick report
Traveled to the broad bench in Herman Gulch (~5,000') via the Boulderfield. Surface snow was soft in the morning (10 cm ski pen, ~45 cm boot pen; 0900) and winds were moderate to strong with occasional extreme gusts. Wind direction was hard to determine, and we experienced both down- and up-sloping effects throughout the day. We practiced a multi-burial transceiver drill at 4,400' and observed about 50 cm of moist to wet snow on top of a crust while burying the beacons. HS was ~220 cm in this location. Snow began around 1015 and was accompanied by strong, generally down-sloping winds from Herman Saddle that funneled through the basin. Snowfall was generally moderate (S1-3) with heavier bursts, and wind slabs were actively forming as we left the field around 1115. On the drive down, we noticed snow fully transitioning to rain around 4,000'.
Avalanche
Lots of natural wet loose on the north side of Bagley Basin, as well as isolated roller balls and partial cornice/wind lip failures on all aspects below 5,000'
