We are taking an avalanche course and we observed and felt whoomping. We dug test pits and had 3 layers break close to the surface during a Compression Test during the initial 1-10 hits from the wrist and a complete break and slide (sudden planar) on the first elbow pat 65 cm deep. The photo is from the instructor's pit where his propagation saw test failed when the back side of his saw had only slid along the persistent layer 40 cm of the 100 he had isolated. Very unstable conditions.
