Relay Peak

Toured relay peak from early this morning until mid afternoon. In the morning the only instability we found was dry loose, typically rider triggered. Snow surfaces largely consisted of breakable sun crust and unconsolidated 6-12 inches on shaded northern aspects. Signs of warming on solar slopes did exist in the late AM but were mitigated by high winds and variable PM sunlight. SSW winds picked up in the early afternoon and were visibility transporting high quantities of snow. Wind loading was seen in the afternoon in areas it did not exist in the morning. By 3:30 I was able to intentionally trigger a small soft slab on the top of an E facing ridge where I could not trigger anything 7 hours earlier. Ample snow was available for transport and one would suspect the wind slab problem becomes exacerbated with the incoming weak storm system. Snow quality for riding was soft and amenable.
