Great mellow turns to be found on Helena! Midway up the snow was fairly faceted underneath. Once above treeline the wind slab is as crusty as a ski resort managers butthole, but that crust was pretty thin. A quick probe with the pole showed a bunch of soft loose snow underneath the crust with a super solid layer about 10cm down. We stayed on pretty mellow sections without any significant overhead hazards. As another MIN had mentioned the snow gets really shallow and crunchy a few hundred meters below the ridgeline but you can find good turns not far below it. Powder was surprisingly good overall.
