Quick Observation

Great skiing on dry snow and good coverage above 1200m. Wet, crusty and below threshold below this elevation. Widespread wind effect in alpine, treeline and exposed below treeline locations. Best skiing between 1650m and 1300m where snow is sheltered. Although we saw no recent avalanches, we stuck to supported terrain up to 35 degrees and avoided large, open slopes with convex features.

Snowpack

181210 layer is down 40cm at treeline here. It's comprised of broken surface hoar (up to 5mm) and small facets. Compression tests resulted in two moderate (11) sudden collapse results down 40cm and two hard (22) sudden planar results down 75cm. Extended column test down 40cm resulted in a failure on the 19th tap which propagated across the entire column (ECTP19). The layer down 75cm is made up of 1-2mm facets. I believe it is what's left of the thin ice lens that formed in this area middle of last month up to ridge top.
