Probing with an ice axe and visual observations showed 25-40 cm of wind deposited snow fully covering airplane bowl from top to bottom. This layer was not reactive, had a textured, chalky surface, and was glued on to the surface below. The low ambient air temp and high winds kept the strong sunlight from having too much of an effect on the snow. Seems like the recent north winds deposited the snow in this section of Oakes and then hammered it into a stable layer. Very enjoyable skiing for about 700-800 feet until the vegetation became too plentiful.
