While ascending the Tuckerman Ravine Trail we (an AIARE level 1 course) observed multiple shooting cracks, whumpfs, and a small (R1/D1) natural (assumed, but questions remain about the trigger given the close proximity to the Sherb) avalanche. In addition to these obvious signs of instability, the class practiced hand hardness assessments and compression tests on a similar aspect (E) and elevation (2,800'). The compression test resulted in CTE(5)SC down 60cm (ground). Given the numerous signs of instability the group collectively decided to descend the Sherb and spend the remainder of the day practicing rescue skills.
