Intent today was to check out snow stability on the north side of Leavitt Lake before ascending to the Ski Lake area for some laps. Upon arrival, we immediately saw a hard wind crust on all high ridges and most of the exposed lower terrain with some pockets of good snow in gullies and sheltered areas. After we ascended the first part of the finger between Leavitt and Koenig Lakes and dug a snow pit on an east-northeast facing aspect just above the treeline. What we found was a generally right-side-up snowpack with a couple of crust layers in the first meter. A compression test resulted in a CT 18 score with a Q1 shear on top of the crust layer. Because of this, we decided to do an ECT and got a score of ECTN 30. Despite the fractures, we decided that the relatively low volume of snow on top of the crust and high taps required to fracture meant it was safe enough to ski. Across the bowl, we skinned up toward Ski Lake through the trees. No oversized wind deposits were visible and stomps showed no reactivity. We ended the day with laps on the wind-sheltered areas.
