Mt Myra

tandrewschissler, Saturday 8th February, 2025 10:38PM

Great day on Myra! Ascended from pipeline bridge through trees next to E Tennent creek to N bowl. Ascended via rib from N bowl to ridgeline. Predominantly cloudy skies kept the S aspects cool, allowing us to wrap around the S side of the summit block and boot a final gully to the summit. Descended via same route to a mellow gully feature off the ridge then down an E facing forested gully down the rib we ascended. Snow/avy obs: 40+cms from Thursday's storm + 5cm this morning. No slab character to new snow with exception of a few isolated pockets of wind affected snow on ridges. South aspects had solar penetration/moist surface snow down ~4-5cm by 3pm. Cornices growing. Some wind transport at ridgetop seen. Many point releases seen out of steep terrain, some converging into fairly impressive debris piles. No signs of natural slab releases (save for one tiny 4x4m presumed storm slab seen on a NE aspect). Small cornice knocked onto N facing test slope at 1400m (40-45 degrees) - storm snow sloughed only, no cracking or propagation. Weather: cloudy with sunny breaks. -5ish in alpine. Winds light with mod gusts (W in AM, S in PM). 2 short graupel attacks with no significant accumulation.
