Quick Observation

Today in York we found some pretty variable ski conditions. Both south and north facing slopes have been affected by the recent winds that have redistributed recent storm snow into wind slabs. These new wind slabs developed over a layer of softer snow that sits on previous surfaces of either hard wind pressed snow on north-facing slopes or a crust on south-facing slopes. We skied both sides of a ridge starting first with the south-facing slope where the wind slab was bonding well but the skiing was variable, grabby at the top and getting warm and heavy lower down. For our second run, we checked out a north-facing slope where the wind slab was a bit stiffer so we stuck to a more sheltered slope where the snow was less wind affected.
