Morphee (2nd Cabin)

tj2hutch, Saturday 8th February, 2025 10:38PM

Was ok riding down low in meadows, very windy in alpine, out of the southeast with snow transport. Compression test showed persistent weak layer of faceted snow, down 98 cm at snow pit site. This weak layer reacted with medium taps (CTM 16, CTM 18), with a very firm slab above. Extended column test also collapsed on the same weak layer. Snowmobilers triggered a size 1.5 avalanche 2 days earlier, adjacent to pit site. This slide ocurred in the same layer, and slid to base (Please see associated Avalanche report for details) Results were consistent with Avalanche Canada warnings, that of a large, cohesive slab, sitting on a deep persistent weak layer that is unlikely to change soon. Thank you to the Rocky Mountain Riders Snowmobile Club.
