Mostly cloudy skies, light winds and intermittent snow showers on Togwotee today. Lack of sunshine kept snow surfaces cool. Riding quality is improving though old tracks and firm snow can still be felt in most off trail locations. We observed two small (D 0.5) snowmobile triggered avalanches in our travels. One was just below the K snowmobile trail along South Fork Spread Creek on an east aspect at 7800’. The other was in Maverick Creek adjacent to the K trail on an east aspect at 9200’. Both slides were about 50 feet wide and only involved the new snow. Poor visibility prevented any useful photos. Dug a pit at 9400’ on an east aspect near Leidy Lake: Snow depth: 145 cm ECTN11 on the new snow/old snow interface 25cm down. A second test yielded propagation on this interface which in this location consisted of a 2 cm thick sun crust. Prying on the column yielded no results deeper in the snowpack. Overall snowpack structure seems good with the sun crust being a layer of concern once more loading occurs.
